Children’s and infant Tylenol dosage is based first on your child’s weight, then on age when weight isn’t known. The active ingredient in every pediatric Tylenol product is acetaminophen, and U.S. infants’ and children’s liquids now share a single strength — 160 mg per 5 mL. Getting a child’s dose right is one of the most important things a parent can do at home, because the difference between a correct dose and too much is smaller in a small body than in an adult. This hub gathers the weight bands, the label rules, and the safety checks in one place — and everything here is general information that you should confirm with your pediatrician.

Because dosing a child carries more risk than dosing an adult, the guidance on these pages leans conservative on purpose: measure by weight, use the exact device in the box, count every source of acetaminophen, and when a number is unclear, follow the Drug Facts label or ask your pediatrician rather than guess.

Start with weight, not age

A two-year-old can weigh anywhere from about 24 to 35 pounds, so age alone is a rough guide. Pediatric dosing of acetaminophen is calculated from body weight — commonly described as roughly 10–15 mg per kilogram per dose in KidsHealth and AAP-style guidance — which is why the charts on these pages are organized by weight bands first. If you only know your child’s age, the label’s age columns are a reasonable fallback, but weigh your child when you can.

The dedicated guides break this down by situation:

Illustrative weight-based dosing

Illustrative only — for Children's/Infants' Tylenol Oral Suspension 160 mg/5 mL. Doses vary by product and label; confirm with your pediatrician and the Drug Facts panel. For children under 2 (under 24 lb), ask your pediatrician.

Doses may be repeated every 4 hours as needed, with no more than 5 doses in 24 hours, unless a doctor directs otherwise. These figures are the commonly published bands for the 160 mg/5 mL suspension and are shown here as orientation — the amount printed on your product’s label, and your pediatrician’s advice, always take priority.

Safety first, every time

Keep Poison Control handy If you think your child got too much acetaminophen, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (free, 24/7, U.S.) or 911 right away — even if the child seems fine. Early acetaminophen overdose often has no symptoms.

Only use the dosing device that comes with the product — never a kitchen spoon. Don’t combine Tylenol with other medicines that contain acetaminophen (many cold, cough, and flu products do), and see our guidance on alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen for kids before rotating medicines. For product basics, visit Infant Tylenol and Children’s Tylenol. This hub is general information and does not replace your pediatrician’s advice.
